Ireland’s gambling regulation is famously outdated. The primary legislation — the Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956 and the Betting Acts — predates the internet by decades. Online casino operators targeting Irish players currently fall into a regulatory grey area:

- There is a public register. GRAI publishes its licence holders at grai.ie. Read the Activity column, not the company name — several holders trade under casino-sounding names while holding only a betting licence.
- So no online casino holds an Irish licence today. Every online casino open to Irish players is licensed offshore, usually Malta or Curaçao. Any site describing a casino as “GRAI-licensed” is wrong, and that tells you something about how carefully it checks everything else.
- Ireland’s national gambling exclusion register (Gambling Regulation Act 2024, sections 44–49) is not yet commenced, so limits you set at one casino apply only at that casino.
